What are Fat-Protein Units?

Fat-Protein Units (FPU) are a way to account for the delayed blood sugar impact of foods high in fat and protein. Insulinus uses the Warsaw Method to calculate the FPU.

Why FPU matters:

  • Fat and protein can cause blood sugar to rise 2-4 hours after eating
  • This delayed rise can lead to unexpected high blood sugar
  • FPU insulin helps prevent this delayed spike

How FPU is calculated:

  • Fat calories (9 kcal per gram): fat g × 9
  • Protein calories (4 kcal per gram): protein g × 4
  • Total Cals = Fat Cals + Protein Cals
  • Carb equivalent = Total Cals / 10
  • FPU = Carb equivalent / Your carb sensitivity (g/U)

When to take FPU insulin:

  • Take FPU insulin 2 hours after eating
  • Doses are spread over maximum 3 hours (2, 3, and 4 hours after eating)
  • Maximum 3 doses with 2 units per hour when possible
  • Only if FPU ≥ 1.0 AND fat > 40g AND protein > 25g
  • Helps prevent delayed blood sugar spikes

This box shows your recent FPU insulin entries that are still active (within 3 hours).
